What type of bicycle do i get?

iv been looking into purchasing a bike under 300$. i want to be able to offroad (nothing hardcore), just rugged trails if anything. but i want to be able to go long distance with a decent amount of speed as well. i considered a hybrid but will that suffice? thank you
