Is a Remington 597 legal to own in California?

A couple of friends and I are going backpacking, and we'd like to pack something with a little more punch than the .22LR (Remington 597 is chambered in .22WMR). I'm old enough to buy a rifle, but not old enough to buy a handgun. Suggestions?
