What would be best gun for me to buy in a high rise in Miami?

I'll be living in Miami and know the crime rate is big down there and want to be safe. I will be spending around 600 dollars. So that leaves many options. I figure handgun is only way to go. But throw some ideas at me for that price.I can handle shooting larger caliber pistols as well. Thanks guys
