Why is it more socially acceptable in America to carry a handgun then it is to carry a pack of cigarettes?

Even a dumb Brit like me knows that the US Constitution permits the right to bare arms to defend yourself and your children. As far as I'm aware the constitution makes no mention of cigarettes.
